If Toronto Maple Leafs fans were holding on to any sort of hope that star forward Mitch Marner would have a change of heart and re-sign rather than hit free agency, those ambitions were likely all but dashed on Saturday. Marner, who’s coming off a monster season in 2024 in which he scored a career-best 102 points, played out the final year of his contract without trying to negotiate a long-term extension with the Leafs, and he’s expected to have a laundry list of suitors if he hits the open market on July 1. During the NHL Network broadcast of Day 2 of the 2025 NHL draft, Friedman revealed the Maple Leafs are in talks to trade Marner to the Pacific Division champion Vegas Golden Knights.
